Interview with 91 year old James Frederick (Jim) Blakemore in the Garden of Memories at Rannerdale Home, Christchurch. Born in 1893, Springston, he joined the Territorials at 17. He enlisted in early 1916 and sailed to England via Cape Town and Durban in June 1916. He was a sergeant Lewis gunner at Passchendaele. "The Somme, Messines, Passchendaele, Polygon Wood, the German offensive of 1918, the Hindenburg line and more ... I went right through to Germany." He was awarded the Military Medal for gallantry on the field. Citation for: James Frederick Blakemore 14930 M.M. Operations British front before Puisieux 14/15th August 1918. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During the attack it was chiefly due to the courageous leadership of Sergeant Blakemore that 2 enemy machine guns and 12 prisoners were captured. With only three men he bombed an enemy post, rushed it, shot the officer in command and captured the machine guns and garrison. He then consolidated the captured position. Throughout the operations this N.C.O.s coolness and splendid leadership was a fine example to all ranks. from" Honours and Awards to the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in the Great War 1914-1918 p. 34
