Photograph, Special delivery in the Desert 1940s.
Shared by Te Hikoi Museum
A black and white photograph of four men in army uniforms unloading parcels from a vehicle in the middle of a desert. An inscription on the reverse side of the photograph states 'Nofilia. Yours truly helping to unload parcels the day before Christmas'. Nofilia (or Nofaliya or Nawfaliya) is a town on the coast of Libya and saw little fighting during World War Two. Jack Bickley is helping unload and is second from the left. The round parcels are suggestive of cakes from home ? The date was Thursday, the 24th December, 1942. Part of the Jack Bickley collection. John Wallace (Jack) Bickley, born in Riverton in 1915, was undergoing teacher training in Dunedin in 1940 when he enlisted in the army and served overseas World War Two, returning to NZ in November 1945. Marrying his sweetheart Irene on 26th December 1945 and beginning his teaching career he taught until 1975 and passed away in 1978 in Arrowtown. Irene passed away in 2012.
