Photograph, Felucca, North Africa 1940s
Shared by Te Hikoi Museum
A black and white photograph of a Felucca. A felucca is a traditional wooden sailing boat with a single sail used in the Mediterranean, including around Malta and Tunisia. However, in Egypt, Iraq and Sudan (particularly along the Nile and in the Sudanese protected areas of the Red Sea), its rig often consists of two lateen sails. Despite the availability of motorboats and ferries, feluccas are still in active use as a means of transport in Nile-adjacent cities like Aswan or Luxor. They are especially popular among tourists who can enjoy a quieter and calmer mood than motorboats have to offer. Taken in North Africa 1940s. Photograph part of the Jack Bickley collection. John Wallace (Jack) Bickley, Service Number 48015, born in Riverton in 1915, was undergoing teacher training in Dunedin in 1940 when he enlisted in the army and served overseas World War Two, returning to NZ in November 1945. Marrying his sweetheart Irene on 26th December 1945 and beginning his teaching career he taught until 1975 and passed away in 1978 in Arrowtown. Irene passed away in 2012.
