Iron, Gasoline, Coleman's Model 4 A
Shared by Western Bay Museum
The Coleman Model 4A laundry iron features a gasoline-powered heating system, eliminating the need to heat on a stove or use electricity. It includes an integrated fuel tank and valve and pump system which is used to pressurise the gasoline. Once pressurised, the gasoline is ignited with a lit match, activating the internal gas burner that then heats the heavy metal baseplate. This design allows for continuous ironing without the need for reheating. While innovative for its time, the iron posed significant safety risks. The use of gasoline made it susceptible to fire or explosion if not handled with care. Also included is the original packaging box, a metal stand and three paper information sheets.
