Photograph, Florence, Ponte Vecchio

Shared by Te Hikoi Museum

This photograph titled by Jack Bickley 'Florence Ponte Vecchio traffic' was probably taken from the bridge Ponte Vecchio looking over ruins in Florence Italy. The bridge said to be the most beautiful in Florence was spared by the Germans when they destroyed the bridges of Florence on the night of 3 August 1944. Blocks of buildings on both sides of the bridge were destroyed many of them famous buildings but the Ponte Vecchio remained standing. The bridge was built in the late 10th century and spans the Arno River. Part of the Jack Bickley collection. John Wallace (Jack) Bickley, service no 48015, born in Riverton in 1915, was undergoing teacher training in Dunedin in 1940 when he enlisted in the army and served overseas, returning to NZ in November 1945. Marrying his sweetheart Irene on 26th December 1945 and beginning his teaching career he taught until 1975 and passed away in 1978 in Arrowtown. Irene passed away in 2012.
