Photograph, Thomas McKenzie

Shared by Te Hikoi Museum

A black and white photograph of Thomas William McKenzie. Thomas McKenzie was married to Christina (neé Kelman) on 11 April 1882, the family lived in Gore. Thomas and Christina had five sons Charles, Walter, James, Colin, and Arthur. Their only daughter, Mary, married James Herries Beattie on 25 May 1910 at the residence of her father in East Gore. Her husband, James worked as a journalist, historian and ethnographer, researching and recording the traditions and knowledge of Māori in the South Island. Mary later moved to Waimate sometime in the 1920s or 1930s and it is likely that Thomas moved to be with his daughter in his later years.
