Photograph, Possibly the last meeting of the Native Land Court in Riverton

Shared by Te Hikoi Museum

Possibly the last meeting of the Native Land Court in Riverton. Research is ongoing as to the exact date this image was taken. A comprehensive history of the foundation of Māori Land Courts can be found at www.māorilandcourt.govt.nz. An inscription on the back has part of some surnames and possibly decipher as: 'Goodwillie, Bates, Cameron, Davis, Stevens, Portnick, Wesley, R D Joss' others are illegible. Also on the back are instructions for cropping and enlarging three ladies and one gentleman to a separate photo. They are as follows: 'Seated on the pavement the woman, first left, is Hema Poko, also seated second on the left is Caroline (Kuini Te Auta) Goodwillie. She holds a small woven flax bag. The woman seated on the pavement fifth from the left wears a large, brimmed hat and is Harriet Bates. Mr. Charles Goodwillie stands second on the right of the image. He wears a bowler hat and stands slightly to the front.' Te Hikoi Museum holds the colourised cropped version of the four.
