Sylvester Gordon Roderique, the son of the sea captain, Joseph Roderique and his wife Elizabeth (nee Hart) was born in Riverton in 1895. He enlisted in February 1915, with his occupation listed as Miner. Sylvester was killed in action in World War One, 27 September 1916, Aged just 21 years old, he is buried at Warlencourt British Cemetery. A brother Maurice 1891-1975 was severely wounded at Gallipoli. On March 3rd, 1918, another brother, Avon, died as part of a wider tragedy, having shot and killed two officers, he turned the gun upon himself. Avon was presumed insane at the time. The inscription on the back of the card reads 'From Silvy To Uncle Bob with Love'. Bob Hart was his mother's brother.
