Photograph, Iron Bridge, Wallacetown

Shared by Te Hikoi Museum

Printed on the front: 'Oreti Iron Bridge, Southland, N.Z.'. Handwritten on the back, 'The iron bridge beyond Wallacetown on the Riverton road, Southland. Imported from England and still in (1906) in use’. At 3.12pm on 14th October 1936 this 120ft, 92 year old bridge was blown up by the Dunedin group of the 3rd Field Squadron of the Royal Engineers. It was one of the biggest and most spectacular bridge blasting operations ever carried out in New Zealand. Houses eight miles away in Invercargill were shaken and severe shaking was felt in Wallacetown a mile away, but no household damage was reported. Power and phone lines were cut by flying debris. A report of the demolition can be found in Papers Past in the Press dated 15th October 1936. A two lane concrete bridge replaced the old bridge and is still in use at time of writing, 2023.
