Te Uru Waitakere Contemporary Gallery is West Auckland's regional gallery. We present a diverse programme of contemporary exhibitions, events and activities, including art, craft and design, to reflect and strengthen the full diversity of cultural identities, interests and potential of our community. As a destination gallery, Te Uru operates from an award-winning, purpose-built building that is part of the recently re-opened Lopdell Precinct.

The gallery first opened in 1986 as the Waitemata City Arts and Cultural centre, later known as Lopdell House Gallery, sited in the historic Lopdell House building in the heart of Titirangi, gateway to the Waitakere rain forest and en route to Auckland's famous west coast beaches. From 2012, during an extensive redevelopment programme, the gallery delivered exhibitions and outreach style programmes from a temporary base in nearby New Lynn. We reopened as Te Uru on Saturday 1 November 2014 in our new building alongside Lopdell House.

Our name, Te Uru, makes reference to Te Hau a Uru, the wind that blows from the west, a powerful characteristic of the region and an important story for local iwi, Te Kawerau ā Maki, who have bestowed us with this new kaupapa. The west wind shares the messages and vision of the people that live in the west, brings change, sets direction and influences Auckland City from its mountainous perch atop the Great Forest of Tiriwa. Te Uru will be a source of information and ideas that will project across the region - a fitting framework for a contemporary gallery. The new name was launched at a special members' meeting in April 2014.

Our mission is to provide contemporary visual art and design experiences in Waitakere that inspire, engage and challenge. We recognise Maori as Tangata Whenua and foster the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi internally and externally to enhance and develop our programme.

We have six values that guide us in achieving excellence and making the gallery a trusted and valued member of the community: manaakitanga, innovation, collaboration, responsiveness, inclusiveness and sustainability.

Te Uru receives core operational funding from Auckland Council through the Waitakere Ranges Local Board.

Te Uru Waitakere Contemporary Gallery Incorporated was first established in 1984 as Lopdell House Society, a not-for-profit organisation registered under the Charities Act 2005 - CC41215.

For everyone’s safety, all visitors over the age of 12 are required to display a valid vaccine pass, wear a mask and sign in on entry to the gallery.
