Fort Taiaroa is located underground at Taiaroa Head at the tip of Otago Peninsula. It is managed by the Otago Peninsula Trust who also manages the Royal Albatross Centre. Guided Tours operate daily from the Royal Albatross Centre through the underground Fort.
The Fort features a series of underground tunnels leading to the 1886 Armstrong Disappearing Gun and magazine area where a museum is housed. There is a focus on early Māori presence in the area (fortified pā) and the military involvement in the 1880's during the perceived threat from Tsarist Russia. The Armstrong Disappearing Gun was installed in May 1889. It is the only one of it's kind in it's original gun pit and has been restored to working condition.
