Shipbuilding activities and the emergence of supporting industries further enhanced the district's significance.
The bustling river served as a transportation and commerce highway until the railway reached nearby Kaiwaka in 1913.
This collection showcases artefacts from both Māori and European settlements, providing insight into how trade shaped the economy and social fabric of the district. It serves as a reminder of our shared heritage and helps us understand our present-day community.
At Mangawhai Museum, we recognise that we hold more than just objects; we hold stories.
We acknowledge that for some objects, we lack records of their original names, their intended purposes, or the specific circumstances of their acquisition. We do not claim to be the sole "experts" on history. Instead, we invite you to help us complete these stories, and we welcome your knowledge. If you have information regarding an object in our care, or we have incorrect information, please connect with our Collections team.
