Bringing all number of rural characters onto our TV screens, the Topp Twins duo used comedy-infused country and folk as a way to deliver hard truths about the gritty NZ characters that could be found on our farms, racetracks, country clubs and campgrounds.
Self-described as the only “yodeling lesbians in the world”, the Huntly born twins started busking on the streets of Auckland in the 1970s – 1980s and went onto perform at protests and public events relating to issues including women's rights, homosexual law reform and Māori land rights. In 1981, they took part in the protests against the South African Springbok rugby team tour of New Zealand. In honour of Jools Topp’s life (1958 – 2026), who brought to life characters including Camp Leader, Ken Smythe, Raelene and Prue, here are a selection of pieces from across our national collection which shine a light on her indomitable spirit and creative-life.
