Stripy Scraps jumper, 2024

Shared by New Zealand Fashion Museum

This jumper was entirely created from decades of yarn leftover from other projects. Each stripe is both a story and a valuable memory - it is my life captured and embodied in a hand knitted taonga. Each stripe/colour carries a story - I can remember the original project that each yarn was leftover from: garments for whanau, special hand spun yarns for significant family birthdays, and functional garments. There are several rows that I knitted while sitting with my mother in law in hospital who died not long after - those rows are very special.
