Doorknob

Shared by Katherine Mansfield House & Garden

This doorknob, once used by the Beauchamps, was taken from the front door of 75 Tinakori Road in 1967 before the house was demolished. Maude Morris, a Katherine Mansfield scholar, became aware of the Ministry of Work’s demolition plans and sent her grandson to rescue one of the internal glass doorknobs mentioned in ‘The Garden Party’. While he could not find the glass doorknobs, he was given permission by the demolition foreman to take the front doorknob instead. Purchased with funds from a bequest from Mary-Annette Hay (1925-2024).
