Hastie Family - Newspaper Clippings

The collection of clippings based on brother and sister: Image shown is Euan Hastie (b 1976) and Fiona Hastie (b 1978). Son and daughter of Robert and Deb Hastie. The newspaper article is undated but from the article on the flip side shows 50 years of CWI, established March 1938 which would make this article March 1988. It was printed by the 'Coast to Coast Courier', a Wellsford paper run by John Ross, a teacher of journalism. The other articles are about R.N Hastie (known as Nelson) and Dr K.M Hastie (known as Kate). The newspaper articles are dated 1970 and 1973 collected from the Advocate and N.Z. Herald. The clippings are titled: 'Bush given to Crown as Reserve', 1970. Advocate and 'Mangawhai Bush Given To Nation', 1970. N.Z. Herald. The stories relate to Mr R.N. Hastie who had presented 60 acres of native bush for a scenic reserve between Langs Beach and Mangawhai Heads. Included is a Death Notice - Hastie, Robert Nelson, 1973 accompanied by an article in regard to his passing titled 'Bushman and Farmer'. 1970. N.Z. Herald. The story notes Nelson Hastie as one of the great characters of North Auckland, died aged 75 on September 29, 1973. Born 1898 in Mangawhai and where he lived all his life. He owned a bullock team and was also a keen participant in local affairs. Another article titled 'View of Practical Bushman', 1973. N.Z. Herald. An article written by R.N. Hastie, gum digger and bushman of Northland. He discusses his concerns about the preservation of kauri trees in the region. He also highlights the importance of controlling pests which can damage kauri trees. He emphasizes the need for practical forest management and the sustainable use of kauri resources. The last article is titled 'Served at Clinic in Hong Kong', N.Z. Herald. This memoriam article is about Dr Katherine Millner Hastie and her time spent in Hong Kong Peace Clinic as a New Zealand doctor. She died after a short illness. It is noted in pen on the article that she died 5th September 1973 (only a few weeks before her brother Robert Nelson Hastie died). On the back of the article is a Death Notice - Hastie, Katherine Millner (Dr), 1973. Added in the collection is Wallace Hastie funeral card that was held in St. Michael's Church, Hakaru, 1989.
