Portrait photograph of Jane Hayes, Cromwell

Shared by Cromwell Museum

This beautiful self-portrait captures Jane/Jean Hayes (née Adamson), who was born on 17 May 1848, and passed away on 9 January 1938. Mrs. Hayes married John Hayes on 21 June 1867. In the portrait, Mrs. Hayes is wearing a black dress or coat featuring a distinctive leaf pattern on the lapel collar. A black and white leaf-patterned scarf is elegantly draped around her neck. She holds a small book adorned with a white cross in her hands. Mrs. Hayes gazes directly at the photographer through her small spectacles, her mouth slightly ajar, creating a compelling and intimate connection with the viewer.
