Moa bone - axis vertebra from Megalapteryx didinus (Upland moa). Originally identified as Anomalopteryx didiformis but reassessed by T.H. Worthy in 1995 as being from Megalapteryx didinus (Upland moa). Excavated by Dr N. Ritchie (Ministry of Works archaeologist) from The Station Deposit in 1981 during the construction of new roading associated with the Clutha Development hydro dam construction project. The site was subsequently destroyed by the formation of the new highway. Moa are an extinct species of flightless birds that were endemic to New Zealand.
