Photograph, Postcard of Piazzo Degli Uffici Statali
Shared by Te Hikoi Museum
A black and white postcard of a large panoramic square in a city. During World War 1 numerous clashes took place here and at the end of the war it was decided to create this space mainly to remember the fallen. It is used today for celebrations. Jack Bickley has written on the back "On the lamp post marked, the Germans had hung the bodies of Corbari, the Robin Hood of Rimogessa? his sweetheart Iris Versari and the fearless partisan Casadei" Hard to read the writing, but they were Partisans and when the Germans killed them, the bodies were publicly displayed here for two days. "When we came into the town wreaths were hung on the lamp posts by the Partisans." Silvio Corbari, born on 10 January 1923 in Faenza, was strongly anti fascist and his story of courage can be read at https://comandosupremo.com/silvio-corbari/ Part of the Jack Bickley collection. John Wallace (Jack) Bickley, born in Riverton in 1915, was undergoing teacher training in Dunedin in 1940 when he enlisted in the army and served overseas World War Two, returning to NZ in November 1945. Marrying his sweetheart Irene on 26th December 1945 and beginning his teaching career he taught until 1975 and passed away in 1978 in Arrowtown. Irene passed away in 2012.
