Gum chips

Shared by The Kauri Museum Matakohe

The great bulk of gum retrieved during the 'machine' age was known as 'chips'. Thousands of sacks were filled during a season, returning as much as 2000 pounds per acre. These Dalmatians bag the results of months of hard work. Gum was classified to quality and size ready for export. The year was 1927 at Sweetwater (west of Awanui) , though the photo may have been taken at Ahipara Hill. Young girls are thought to be the daughters of Nicholas Covich. The little boy on the sack was Lui Covich.
