The portrait depicts Sir Henry Kelliher in the Long room of the Puketutu Island homestead, the Kelliher family home since the 1940's. Although the room overlooks the garden, the curtain is drawn, allowing a sliver of sunlight through on the left. Kelliher's direct gaze engages the viewer, while his white collar, striped tie, clasped hands, and gold wristwatch are striking elements of the portrait.
