100 Years - Centennial Celebrations for Tūātapere - featuring the song, "Where The Waiau River Flows Into The Sea"

Shared by Central & Western Murihiku Southland Archive

For Aotearoa NZ 'Music Month' in May it seems apt to be able to archive a song written by two Tūātapere women, for the towns 100th Centenary. The 100th Centenary Celebrations for Tūātapere were held in 2006. Our Community Archives patron - Margaret Thomas, informed us that there was a song written especially for this event by two women who lived in the township at that time, and she gifted us a copy. They performed this at the Centennial event. The song is shown above, and is recorded as: COVER: "Where The Waiau River Flows Into The Sea", A Song For The Tuatapere Centennial, 2006. Written By Sue Hogbin & Jo Cleeton, (c) New Song Productions Tuatapere." LYRICS: "WHERE THE WAIAU RIVER FLOWS INTO THE SEA, (c) Sue Hogbin and Jo Cleeton, November 2005. Verse 1 - There is a town within the bush Where the mountains touch the sky, A hundred years have fashioned it, As time has rolled on by, A town that's not been buckled By harsh adversity, Where the Waiau River flows into the sea. Chorus - A hundred years have made their mark On Tuatapere, A hundred years of living A life that's full and free, Where the Waiau River flows into the sea. Verse 2 - The logging trucks still rumble through But the railway has gone, And businesses have moved away, Yet the town still carries on If our septic tanks keep working We'll all be sewerage free Where the Waiau River flows into the sea. Verse 3 - A town of art and sausages, Of tourists on 'the track', Where perserverance and true grit Is not a thing we lack. A town that's held its head up high And lived a century Where the Waiau River flows into the sea. (c) NEWSONG PRODUCTIONS - 2005 Hopefully this entry will be added to as more information comes to hand. If you or anyone you know has any more information or photos to share or accounts of the Tuatapere Centennial event held in 2006, please do share this with us in the comments section.
