Fiordland or Te Rua-o-te-moko History - View of Lake Ada & Mountains

Shared by Central & Western Murihiku Southland Archive

Fiordland or Te Rua-o-te-moko History - View of Lake Ada & Mountains We were donated this beautiful 1970's image without knowing where it was. Locals have identified it as "Lake Ada" and said it is looking down the Arthur Valley towards Milford or Piopiotahi, and shows the Arthur River going into Lake Ada, this is around 20km long. Research has shown that Lake Ada was created as the result of a landslide some 900 years ago. The last leg of the Milford Track follows the route of the Arthur River, which flows into Milford Sound. Others have identified this as looking north towards Darran Mountains, with Milford Sound or Piopiotahi to the left of image. From looking at the map in the Place Notes below, the Sheerdown Hills appear to be to the right of this image. Yet another person who has visited the site more than once, says that this photo is from the cliff at the head of the lake, and that by 1989 the steps on the Steep Hill side were gone, but they were still there in 1967. They have guessed that the floods got them in the end. A lot of people have said that this site now looks nothing like in this photo above. We are not sure what from the above descriptions from other people on the situation of this photo are correct, except the image certainly does appear to be of Lake Ada, from comparing it to others available online. If anyone highly knowledgeable on this area can give us more accurate information about the positional situation of this photo or history, we would really appreciate that. The photographer, Stewart Mouat, was a keen member of the local district camera club and we have quite a collection of images of the Fiordland or Te Rua-o-te-moko area, and around the Waiau Catchment lakes as well, which will appear in these Community Archives soon. If you or anyone you know has any more photos, information or accounts of the Lake Ada area during the years, please do share these in the comments section. You can do this by making a comment in the space provided under the image page. And please let us know if you have more records to add, they will add the history. Similarly if you were there when these photos were taken and can add more to the story contained above, please let us know, thank you!
