Bosun's call in box with instructions
Shared by New Zealand Maritime Museum Hui Te Ananui a Tangaroa
This is a whistle used on naval ships by a boatswain (or “bosun”), who is the senior crewman on deck. It was historically used to pass commands to the crew because it could be heard better than shouting over the sounds of the sea or bad weather. Different combinations of notes would mean different things. It is now used in traditional naval ceremonies.
