Fiordland or Te Rua-o-Te-Moko - Postcard set of historical scenes: This set of 4 postcards with historical scenes on them, were created from collections of early heritage images held at the prior National Museum of New Zealand, now Te Papa Tongarewa. They are recorded as being made from early photographs taken by the Burton Brothers. VIEW 1 (Card 1) has the following information on the front: 4486 - The "City" - Milford Sound. Burton Bros., Dunedin. On the back of the postcard the following information is recorded: 'The City', Milford Sound, New Zealand. Sited near the present wharf, Donald Sutherland, 'the hermit of Milford', proclaimed the 'City of Milford' in the early 1880's. Burton Bros. photograph, dated March 1887. Collection: National Museum of New Zealand. VIEW 2 (Card 2) has the following information on the front: 4707 - The Sutherland Fall Expedition - Milford Sound, October 88. Burton Bros., Dunedin. On the back of the postcard the following information is recorded: The Sutherland Falls Expedition, New Zealand, October 1888. The Falls are named after Donald Sutherland, 'the hermit of Milford'. This Burton Bros. photograph shows a survey party and two photographic teams at Milford Sound. Collection: National Museum of New Zealand. VIEW 3 (Card 3) has the following information on the front: 4710 - In Milford Sound - Jan '88. Burton Bros., Dunedin. On the back of the postcard the following information is recorded: The pinnace 'Exploring' with an early tourist party in Milford Sound, New Zealand. Mitre Peak is in the background of this Burton Bros. photograph, dated January 1888. Collection: National Museum of New Zealand. VIEW 4 (Card 4) has the following information on the front: 5683 - Head of Lake Te Anau - April 95. Burton Bros., Dunedin. On the back of the postcard the following information is recorded: The 'Leader Group'. A party prepares to leave the old Clinton Hut close to Lake Te Anau, at the beginning of the Milford Track. Burton Bros. photograph, dated April 1895. Collection: National Museum of New Zealand. NOTE: there is no date of creation on these postcards, but the company that produced them was incorporated in 1983, so it seems safe to assume it was after that date. We do hold these original postcards, but not the glass plates. If you or anyone you know has any more photos, information or accounts of Fiordland or Te Rua-o-Te-Moko or anything else in the area during the years, on any aspects of settlers, business, camping trips, tramping/hiking, community life or interesting people, make a comment in the space provided under the image page, or contact us. Please let us know if you have more records to add to these. Kia ora, thank you.
