Ōtautau & Districts Settlers - John Fisher, a brief history

Shared by Central & Western Murihiku Southland Archive

Ōtautau & Districts Settlers - John Fisher, a brief history: This poster was authored by our digitising archivist, to show a brief history of John Fisher, as part of a display for the early Ōtautau Book she is researching and writing. Most commonly known as the owner and publisher of the local and district newspaper, Ōtautau Standard & Wallace County Chronicle, for just over 40 years, the things that are mentioned here, were certainly not all that he did. John Fisher was involved in many communities across our district, from Tūātapere School to Scott's Gap School. John was also Secretary of Dairy Factories from Birchwood to Drummond, and even served on the Farmers Dairy Federation Ltd board where he chaired for a time. So his story is also very important to the entire old Wallace County District that this archive covers. The text content of this reads as follows - "Brief History of John Fisher: John Fisher was a Land & Estate Agent and did other Agency work, such as selling Insurance. - Born at Clifden, Western Southland, 8/7/1863 - Grew up at Clifton, worked in Invercargill - Married in Timaru, Otago - Moved with family to Ōtautau in 1901 - 1902-1946 Served as Town Clerk (until age 83) - Widowed for 1st time in 1904 - 1905-1946 Owned/operated Ōtautau Standard - 1906 Re-married in Ōtautau, Southland - Widowed for 2nd time in 1938 - Passed away aged 87, in 1950, buried Ōtautau 2 images show: John Fisher's Family home, "Aldersyde", cnr. Devon St & Knutsford Road, Ōtautau." Also shown is a photo of John Fisher in later years. The history on this family will be added to further, elsewhere in these Community Archives. In the meantime,if you or anyone you know has got any more photos, information or accounts of any of the John Fisher family during the years, please make a comment in the space provided under the image page, or make contact via the archive email on the front page.
