NOTE: More images to follow later, please come back and check out again This year there was a water problem up at Borland, so the school was moved to Cowley Park, Riverton at short notice, so it could continue. Many renown potters came to teach their craft to our district pottery club members and others, at Borland Lodge in the Pottery School's run by Southland Community College and facilitated and catered by the Ōtautau Potter's Club. As time went on, many students came from near and far to join the fun and learn from the many now famous potters who were immersed in the creative scene in these days… 1981 - Tutors, Jean Hastedt and Roy Cowan CNZM MBE, background: Jean Alison Hastedt is a well-known NZ potter, born in Napier in 1938... She lived in a property at Otaihanga for 42 years, which was where she had worked as a potter. This property has recently sold. Jean was well loved by both the students at both Borland and other district pottery clubs where she tutored, and she exhibited widely across Aotearoa NZ. 'Roy' (James Robson) Cowan, CNZM MBE, 1918-2006. died aged 88... Roy was most well known as a potter, he was also an illustrator and printmaker, and married to Juliet Peter, another potter in Aotearoa NZ. He trained at Wellington Teacher’s College and Slade School of Fine Art, Elected a Fellow of NZ Academy of Fine Arts, Roy also had a Governor-General Award, both of these in 1988. He and his wife helped facilitate the start of the NZ Potter’s Magazine in 1957 and contributed greatly to our ceramics sector across Aotearoa NZ. CLASS ATTENDEE CONTRIBUTIONS: Those who went and remember it, have said, "the site lacked the wow factor of the Borland Lodge, but it was fabulous the school did not need to be cancelled. The classroom seemed huge with a large indoor space, as opposed to the more personal space at Borland Lodge." BORLAND LODGE POTTERY SCHOOL'S: The Ōtautau Potter’s Club were the ones who set up the Borland Lodge Pottery School’s, in conjunction with Southland Community College, from 1978 to at least 1992 from labelled photos, with the OPC carrying on attending Borland for club firings well into the 2000’s. One of the highlights of the week long Borland Lodge School Pottery Classes was the Wednesday ‘Day off’, where they students could do whatever they wanted. Many went off to explore the surrounding wilderness, hiking up trails to lakes and rivers or mountain peaks. Others would sit quietly at the Lodge and chill out, while yet others apparently got up to all sorts of hi-jinks and had a whole lot of fun! You can see some of the nature photos they took in CWA.039.090.020 HISTORY OF THE SITE: Before Borland Lodge was created, the site and buildings had been created as Pig Creek Hostel, which supplied workers accommodation for those on the Monowai Power Project. Once this had been finished, the buildings were turned into an outdoor education space and base for schools and other visiting groups, including team building for corporations and even various arts & crafts groups, like the potters. Many generous students and tutors donated photos of these schools, but we are still missing some years and some tutors. Can you help? Or can you fill in some of the stories about these photos shown here? This entry will be added to as more information comes to hand.
