Borland Lodge Pottery School - 1979 year, Tutors Yvonne Rust & Kevin Griffin Photos of the Pottery School, taken by tutors & students at classes: Image 1 - Kevin Griffin (left) and Yvonne Rust (right) with their pots at Borland Lodge Pottery School, in 1979 Image 2 - Yvonne Rust (far right), with a group of workshop students at Borland Lodge Pottery School, in 1979 NOTE: More images to follow later, please come back and check out again Many renown potters came to teach their craft to our district pottery club members and others, at Borland Lodge in the Pottery School's run by Southland Community College and facilitated and catered by the Ōtautau Potter's Club. As time went on, many students came from near and far to join the fun and learn from the many now famous potters who were immersed in the creative scene in these days… 1979 – Borland Tutors, Yvonne Rust and Kevin Griffin, background: Niria YVONNE Rust, QSM - 1922 – 2002, aged 79 years... On completing a Diploma in Fine Arts in 1946, Yvonne started a foray into pottery. She organised/directed the first NZ National Pottery School, and started her own Art School in 1959. While on the West Coast during the 1960’s, Yvonne Rust got a coal fired salt kiln built in an old brewery, near Greymouth, where she also established a pottery workshop for a time. In 1972 she retired, returning home to became a full-time potter at Parua Bay. Yvonne then established the Northland Craft Trust and their Quarry Arts Centre opened in 1980. In the 1983 New Year Honours List, Rust was awarded a QSM and later Rust was also recognized with an Award from the Academy of Fine Arts in Wellington. She passed on in Greymouth. CLASS ATTENDEE CONTRIBUTIONS: "Yvonne was a hoot, loads of fun, very down to earth and nearly always had a smoke hanging out of her mouth, she could even talk with it in there! That's what I remember most." Kevin Griffin - taught at 1979 Borland Lodge Pottery School... It has been difficult to find much on Kevin Griffin. Although he stayed connected to the arts world, it does not appear as if he continued in pottery. He did achieve the following roles, however. 1977 – Pottery Workshop, Warrington, until not sure when. 1977-78 – Part time Ceramics Teacher, Otago, worked on the Ceramics content of the 3yr Diploma, with Michael Trumic. 1987 – Takes on McSkimming’s, renamed ‘Southern Clay’s’ BORLAND LODGE POTTERY SCHOOL'S: The Ōtautau Potter’s Club were the ones who set up the Borland Lodge Pottery School’s, in conjunction with Southland Community College, from 1978 to at least 1992 from labelled photos, with the OPC carrying on attending Borland for club firings well into the 2000’s. One of the highlights of the week long Borland Lodge School Pottery Classes was the Wednesday ‘Day off’, where they students could do whatever they wanted. Many went off to explore the surrounding wilderness, hiking up trails to lakes and rivers or mountain peaks. Others would sit quietly at the Lodge and chill out, while yet others apparently got up to all sorts of hi-jinks and had a whole lot of fun! You can see some of the nature photos they took in CWA.039.090.020 HISTORY OF THE SITE: Before Borland Lodge was created, the site and buildings had been created as Pig Creek Hostel, which supplied workers accommodation for those on the Monowai Power Project. Once this had been finished, the buildings were turned into an outdoor education space and base for schools and other visiting groups, including team building for corporations and even various arts & crafts groups, like the potters. Many generous students and tutors donated photos of these schools, but we are still missing some years and some tutors. Can you help? Or can you fill in some of the stories about these photos shown here? This entry will be added to as more information comes to hand.
