Vickers Electric Sewing Machine

Shared by Cromwell Museum

The Vickers sewing machine was produced by the Vickers Company in Crayford, London from1914 to 1939. The company was better known for producing armaments such as the Vickers machine gun. The machine is set into a wooden base (now painted cream) and has a wooden cover (also painted). The cover has a key on a string tied to the handle. Serial number 01-19148. There is a bobbin case and six bobbins, a screw driver and two Singer Sewing Machine needle packets (empty). This machine has had a Sew-Tric electric motor attached at the back which drives the wheel of the machine. The hand crank has been removed. Sew-Tric motors are found on many sewing machines sold in Britain in 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. They are good quality conventional brushed electrical motors without electronic components. There is also a lamp mounted on the side of the motor. A foot control and a power plug are each connected to the motor by electric cords. Serial number 252432.
