Information taken from the December 1975 edition, text copied as below: "JET BOAT RUN ON APARIMA RIVER On Sunday 28th September, the Southland Branch of the NZ Jet Boat Association held a jet boat run on the Aparima River. Seven boats were launched at the Fairfax Bridge, and made their way up the Aparima River. All boats reached the Wreys Bush Bridge and after lunch the group continued up the river to Avendale. After the successful run up the river, the boats returned to the launching site. River conditions were ideal and all enjoyed an exciting run on a river that rarely sees the bottom of a jet boat. RW Scott" MORE INFORMATION ON THE JET BOAT ASSOCIATION, SOUTHLAND: It was in 1966 that the Jet Boating Association of NZ are recorded as having established their Southland Branch, according to Environment Southland. However, the club itself records its members as having made their first ever trip up the Waiau River in 1965. It is apparently difficult for those participating in the popular pastime of jet boating in Murihiku Southland to comply with regional rules which apply to all the freshwater rivers, which is a speed limit of 5 knots within 200m of the shore. However there are a few places which have what is called a "permanent speed uplift". Other than this, if jet boaters wish to have an excursion or event, they are required to request a temporary speed uplift from our regional harbourmaster, to be allowed to do this, if it's approved. As mentioned earlier, the Jet Boating NZ Southland Branch started with club members completing a trip up the Waiau River in 1965. 50 years later, some of the club members, and one of the boats that was originally a part of that trip, made a re-enactment journey back up the Waiau River. The group of around 50 boats left the Monowai Power Station on a two hour ride along the river, travelling to Rainbow Beach, with a stop for lunch at the Maroroa Weir. The trip which replicated the original excursion by the club members from 50 years and one day previously, ended up with the Te Anau Club putting on a barbeque to mark the end of this occasion, with the event held on 21 November 2015. Colin Smith, a prior past president at the time of this trip, said at the time, that the Southland Club was healthy, with around 200 members and had celebrated its 50th Anniversary with the Invercargill Jet Boating NZ’s conference in the city earlier in the year. He also commented that the Southland club was the first branch ever established by the NZ Jet Boat Association, so it had a longstanding history. He was also noted as saying a boat was coming to participate from as far away as Blenheim! Club member Eddie McKenzie who had purchased one of the original boats of its owner who had completed the trip of the first club member outing, invited the original member Terry Gillian, who was at the time 86 and living at Te Anau, to attend the re-creation 50th Anniversary trip with him. It would be wonderful to hear from any others who participated in this event and to have some photos to put up in the Community Archives of this, and especially to have some historical photos of the original 1965 trip up the Waiau. If you can help with this, please get in touch with us, thanks. If you or anyone you know has any more photos, information or accounts of the jet boating or races on the Aparima/Jacobs River in the Ōtautau district during the years, please do share these in the comments section. You can do this by making a comment in the space provided under the image page. Please let us know if you have more photos, as they add the history of the district.
