Jaxonite Hair tidy
Shared by Cromwell Museum
Round jaxonite jar in shades of brown with a figured brass lid. The lid has a hole in the centre of the top. Popular during the Victorian era when Victorians considered hair a symbol of eternity. Hair was collected from hairbrushes and stored in a hair receiver until sufficient quantity was available to be woven into jewellery. Jaxonite is a type of phenolic resin, which has been compression moulded.
