Medical Chest, Ambulance
Shared by Wyndham and District Historical Museum
This ambulance chest was used for many years at the Wyndham Horse Racing Club. The contents include various types of braces and bandages, indicating that the most common injuries were broken bones. Wyndham Racing: From 1876 annual hack race meetings were held on the farm of Andrew Hall on the Terrace between Wyndham and Edendale. The first race meeting on the present site, in the reserve behind Raglan Street, was held on New Years Day 1879. In 1923, the Club was granted a certificate of registration by the NZ Trotting Association, and the Racing Club granted the new Club use of its racecourse free of charge for the inaugural meeting. Thereafter, the Trotting Club leased the facilities for their annual meetings. The races have always always been a big deal in Wyndham, being an occasion for local ladies to get dressed up in their best. Race days were especially busy for caterers, with Irvines putting on the spread from 1937 until 1961. In 1985, the New Zealand Racing Authority relegated the course to an 'ungraded' status, resulting in a loss of stakes subsidy and financial support for the upkeep of the facilities. Considering the huge volunteer and community input, this decision was viewed as unjust. The Club had raced at Wyndham on New Years Day for over 100 years, a fact that contributed to the enduring popularity of the occasion, yet for the 1985-86 season, the Authority also relegated the Racing Club's New Years Day meeting to on-course-only status under its schedule of licences. Despite this, as of 2019, both the Harness and Racing Club in Wyndham are going strong, with local trainers still using the facilities.
