Te Kohanga Reo was begun in 1981 by the Department of Maori Affairs in response to Maori concern over the future survival of the Māori language. The first Kohanga Reo, Pukeatua, was opened in 1982 near Wellington. Kohanga Reo flourished with 800 established by 1994 catering for 14,000 mokopuna (the young generation).
