Fua kokoma

Shared by Auckland War Memorial Museum

Fua kokoma. Block used for hat making. This is a fua kokoma made of taiuli (dark wood of the kanava tree, Cordia subcordata). This fua kokoma is a dark brown colour with a smooth unpolished surface. The fua kokoma is dome shaped with an oval shaped base. The top of the dome is slightly flat and is a lighter shade of brown; an indication of its use as a form for hat making. The base of the fua kokoma is cracked, again an indication of its use. The fua kokoma is wrapped in a brown twine with an off-white swing-tag label attached. Fua kokoma were used to form and weave hats. Weavers would begin at the top of the fua (crown) and weave their way down the fua kokoma. The weaving would then be tied to the fua kokoma to hold it in place while the fale (brim) is woven. The fua would then be pressed and folded down to form a groove.
