Clock, Mantle, Waterbury

Shared by Western Bay Museum

Commonly called a mantle clock because clocks of this type often sat on fireplace mantlepieces. They were popular from the mid-1800s. Although battered by age and use this clock is complete and is in working condition. The exterior of the wooden case shows loss of veneer, particularly on the left side of the arch. This loss gives insight into how the case was manufactured as it shows how the maker created slots in the wooden frame to allow it to be curved. Made by The Waterbury Clock Company who by 1915 had become a household name in the USA. However, the company had its financial ups and downs and during one such downturn it collaborated with Disney to manufacture Mickey Mouse wristwatches. Despite Walt Disney’s initial skepticism, the collaboration proved a financial success. A printed stamp inside the clock case references J Prince, Watchmaker, Auckland, as the possible seller of the clock. Source: https://nzmuseums.co.nz/collections/3015/objects/440/waterbury-clock
